Ed and Al begin preparing for the Alchemy Exam while lodging with Shou Tucker, "The Sewing-Life Alchemist," who is well-known for creating intelligent chimeras, including one that could speak the human language (but died shortly after it was created). The brothers become fast friends with Tucker's daughter, Nina, and her dog, Alexander. The Elrics' cramming is only interrupted when Hughes and his wife, Gracia, throw a birthday party for Ed. During the party, Gracia goes into labor and they witness the birth of Elicia. Ed discovers at this time that he can perform Alchemy without a Transmutation Circle. After the written portion of the test, Mustang forces Al to drop out so Al's lack of a body due to the attempted Human-Transmutation is not revealed. Ed successfully passes the interview and passes the practical portion "with flying colors" when he saves the entire prospective State-Alchemist group with his quick thinking, courage, and ability to transmute without a Circle.
